700K cash. What do I do?

I have 700k cash sitting in my money market account. I have been sitting on cash since 2016 waiting for that recession so I can perfectly time the market. And in the process I have lost ...not sure how much but a LOT.
So I have the following in mind.
  1. 33% - golden butterfly allocation
  2. 33% - dividend growth investing
  3. 33% - high savings account (wealthfront)
Let me know if this would protect me from the downside while giving me a decent amount of returns.
EDIT 02/20
Here is a summary of all the nuggets that came out from this thread. Love it. Will updated when I plan my portfolio.
-VGRO for the win. ( probably VUG)
-three-fund portfolio Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund (VTSAX) Vanguard Total International Stock Index Fund (VTIAX) Vanguard Total Bond Market Fund (VBTLX)
-I personally like some international exposure so have 20% of my portfolio in VTIAX. Great article in international investing https://www.fidelity.com/viewpoints/investing-ideas/international-investing-myths
-SPCE. Bet it all on $40 June calls.
-You might consider a bogleheads portfolio. Here is my set it and forget it allocation: 70% VTSAX (ETF equivalent is VTI) 20% VTIAX (ETF equivalent is VXUS) 10% VBTLX (ETF equivalent is BND)
-A very general rule of thumb is that your bond allocation should equal your age minus 10 (i.e., a 40-year old investor would own approximately 30% bonds, 70% stocks).
-I plan to dollar cost average into simple investments like the S&P, dividend growth fund DGRO (which I just love), and some bonds for safety. It’s very similar to VIG
-Everything into SPCE calls. Literally no risk ( are you serious?)
-if you want to mess with things, i would say swap the small cap value for dividend growth in the golden butterfly. ( Makes sense) having 33% of your 750k in high savings is DUMB. (thanks)
-Dollar cost average into the market. Select an appropriate asset allocation for your goals. ( Yes!!!)
-Be aware that the average return (say 6-7%) is not the same as as what you can realistically draw as an income.First, for a consistent income stream you need to inflation proof the principle.
-Also the portfolios that have been analyzed to death that can reliably support that are basically 50 to 70 percent broadly diverse equities and the difference in broadly diverse bonds (index funds with essentially no fees or loads of course). 6-12mo DTE AAPL/MSFT CALLS. LEHGO (Nah!)
-I would invest a small PORTION, into a mix of dividend stocks/etf, a mix of growth stocks/etf, and a mix of gold and gold miners. I wouldn’t do bonds personally, but I would consider high yield saving account if it is liquid and they payout interest often (daily) and I can transfer money quickly to take advantage of market opportunities. ( Dividend stocks and Growth stocks makes sense)
-I wouldn’t put everything in the market all at once. Start very small and add to your positions slowly until you get more comfortable and understand the market more. Always have some cash on the sideline to take advantage of potential opportunities. ( Will follow this advice)
-If it were my 700k I would invest in Dividend Kings and Aristocrats and let the yield on cost grow over the next decade or two. ( Thanks for letting me know, i will look into it more)
-My recommendation would be to DCA into a growth fund like VUG over the next 12-24 months. That will protect you from a sudden correction. Personally, I wouldn't invest in dividend/value tickers, especially if you're under 40. (I’d definitely do this, Thanks. I will do Dividend growth for the passive income)
-If I suddenly got $700K, I'd put it all in high-growth tech funds. (If this was 2015 and I were to d it again, I’d do it. FAANGU stocks might be at peak) However, there's still value to be found in this expensive market. For example, the banking sector still looks undervalued relative to the S&P. So you can probably divide your allocation between growth, value, and money market funds.
-bitcoin (Will run away from any crypto)
-Everything else which isn't that defensive cushion is a highly diversified portfolio of stocks which produce an average dividend of 1.7%. Having more cash or bonds than you need is typically going to underperform. VGRO for the win. Set it and forget it! (Probably not, I’d probably do a US growth fund)
-If you were to try to diy look up some ways to invest in non correlated asset classes that offer a higher rate of return while limiting down side. If you want dividends, I'm a fan on the high yield bond fund. Make sure you do your research as to what's actually in it, though, and balance your portfolio accordingly. Understand the risks involved in bonds, and the risks involved in bonds that pay 8%, before investing. ( I think VWINX is a good one)
-I'll throw out the two rock solid fundsI always recommend: Vwelx/vwinx. The divvy alone will at least keep your assets in the game, and if you look at '08 vwinx only took a 27% hit from previous highs. ( I like the VWINX more)
-Simply put your money into VTWAX. total world stock index. Maximum diversification. Low cost. Low risk as possible. (not too optimistic about the emerging market and frontier markets)
-30 houses in a cheap metro. (Too much work, I have a demanding full time job and collecting rents is no fun when you have difficult clients)

The basics of crypto-trading: indicators, charts and trend lines

The basics of crypto-trading: indicators, charts and trend lines

The basics of crypto-trading: indicators, charts and trend lines
Halving on the Bitcoin network has become one of the key events in the cryptocurrency market, which has fueled the interest not only of long-standing players, but also has caused the release of new ones. This is evidenced by recent data on the growing demand for crypto assets on top cryptocurrency exchanges such as Bithumb Global. For those who are just getting acquainted with the crypto-market and want to try their hand at trading a new class of assets, we will tell you what tools crypto-exchanges offer and how to use them in crypto-trading.
To start trading cryptocurrencies, you must first select:
• Crypto-wallet — there are several types of crypto-wallets: hot, cold, desktop, mobile and paper. All of them provide different levels of security and convenience. At the same time, the best option for storing cryptocurrencies is the use of two different wallets — hot and cold. So do most large companies working with digital assets.
• Crypto-exchange is a trading platform that will allow you to exchange, buy and sell cryptocurrencies. Such platforms can be centralized (CEX), decentralized (DEX) or hybrid, combining the qualities of CEX and DEX.
• A crypto-portfolio is a collection of crypto-assets collected for profit. It is best to form it in three stages: part of the currency for long-term storage (from 1 year and longer), another part — a medium-term deposit (up to six months) and a deposit for trading for several days or a week. When starting crypto trading, it is advisable to diversify your investment in a deposit for trading, paying attention not only to the potential of a particular coin, but also to the ways of earning that the cryptocurrency market offers. Experts advise at the initial stages to choose assets from the top 10 rating by capitalization.

Terminology

Order — a trader’s request for a cryptocurrency transaction. Orders are divided into market orders — for purchase (Buy) or sale (Sell), and pending — requests for a transaction at a non-market price, waiting for it to be at the right level. Pending orders include:
⁃ Limit — for sale / purchase at a price higher / lower than the current market price
⁃ Stop loss — orders to limit the loss
⁃ Take Profit — Take Profit Order
Market maker and market taker are market participants who create and accept orders. The market maker creates a new transaction request, increases the turnover of the exchange and raises the liquidity of the crypto asset, while the receiving market taker takes the asset out of circulation, lowering its liquidity. In this connection, different commissions are introduced on some crypto exchanges for makers and takers.
Exchange Cup or Order Book — a table with limit orders, which displays the closest sellers and buyers, where sellers’ orders are marked in red, and buyers are marked in green. The columns of the table show the number of cryptocurrencies and the price at which they intend to sell or buy. At the junction of these tables, a spread is formed — the difference in the price of supply and demand. The lower the spread, the more liquid the cryptocurrency. The analysis of the stock market is a leading indicator of the state of the market, since it allows you to predict changes before they happen.
Long and short positions (Long and Short) — the usual “mode” of trading. In the case of a long position, we buy cheaper and sell more. It is believed that the growth of assets in the market is a long process, therefore, work in this direction is also called long. The second option means a short position, that is, a game for a fall. The market believes that the decline in the value of assets occurs quickly, that is, in a short time. Therefore, this position is called “short.”
Exchange chart — shows the change in the price of cryptocurrency over time and is the most important tool for technical analysis. Charts display price changes with a line, bar and candlestick.
Bulls and bears — in the market so-called buyers and sellers. There is an analogy with the nature of animals: buyers always push the price up, creating a demand for something, and it turns out that the price seems to be pushed by horns. In this connection, bulls are optimists, they believe that the prices of the shares they bought will rise, and someday they will sell the asset more expensive than they bought. The bulls in the market are overwhelming (by approximate estimates, up to 80%), long investments are kept on them, and the bull trend means stable growth of stocks and general welfare. Bears, in turn, are sellers who have learned to capitalize on a falling market: they usually try to sell cryptocurrencies faster, often lowering the price of an asset. Concluding a contract for the sale, they fix its value, and then wait until the goods fall in price, close the deal and put the proceeds in their pocket. Bears are interested in a constant reduction in prices and achieve their goal, provoking an increase in supply: open short positions and sell until the price drops to the desired level.
Technical analysis is a set of tools for market forecasting of prices based on the movement of value in the past. In technical analysis, the same tools can be used for different markets and trading pairs with a slight adjustment of indicators. Also, technical tools are equally successfully used on any timeframes — from a minute to a year.
Fundamental analysis — this type of analysis is based on the consideration of financial and production market indicators that may affect the price of a traded instrument. The mood of market players, current and growing trends, indicators of production activity — all this information can give an extensive idea of the potential of the investment object in question. The main disadvantage of the fundamental analysis is that the information provided by him is insufficient to predict the movement of prices in some local areas. It is possible to determine a potentially good company that has excellent financial performance and has real prospects, but it will be impossible to determine the moment of entering a short-term profitable trade with a good indicator of risk to profit ratio.
Pattern — behavioral model / trading setup / market pattern. Patterns are one of the most common methods for analyzing price movements. Each pattern is always based on a certain idea, the simplest and most understandable. There are a lot of trading models, but all of them are derived from the classical model of breakdown or rebound from certain significant price levels.

Basic cryptocurrency trading tools at Bithumb Global

Using the example of a centralized cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb Global, we will analyze the main elements that cryptotraders will encounter in the initial stages of trading. When choosing a cryptocurrency exchange, first of all, you need to pay attention to the presence of:
⁃ Convenient ways to deposit and withdraw funds
⁃ Fiat currency support
⁃ High number of trading pairs
⁃ Information on the current state of cryptocurrency rates
⁃ Cryptocurrency Rate Charts
⁃ Technical indicators
⁃ Different levels of user verification
⁃ Built-in cryptocurrency wallet
⁃ 24/7 tech support
On the Bithumb Global main page, a selection of top trading pairs is offered, where cryptocurrency tickers are listed, their price, exchange rate for the last day, daily trading volume and the asset quotes movement chart.

If you select a pair from this list, then Bithumb Global will automatically transfer the user to the Base Version of Spot Trading. Spot trading — the terms of the transaction with cryptocurrency, in which payment is made to both parties immediately.
Here the user can get acquainted with the latest price of an asset, the volume of transactions with it, data on transactions and the minimum and maximum prices for the last day.

You can select another trading pair in the top menu by hovering over the corresponding button, but the easiest way is to find the desired pair through the search. At the same time, the Professional Version of Spot Trading opens up a wider set of tools for the user, which will be discussed later.

Trading Tools Professional Version Bithumb Global

On the Professional Version, users can use price charts in the form of Candles, which look like a series of vertical lines and display price changes, where the upper point shows the maximum that the price has reached and the lower one — the minimum. If the closing price is lower than the opening, then the candle will be painted red or black, and if higher, then green or white. Knowing the direction of the price movement (body color of the candle), we can say exactly where the closing and opening prices are.

Also in this version of Spot Trading, a price chart is available to users in the form of a Glass, where sellers ‘bids are marked in red and buyers’ bids are marked in green. The analysis of the stock market is a leading indicator of the state of the market, since it allows you to predict changes before they happen. If, for example, a large congestion of sales requests at the upper price limit can be noted, then as soon as the market reaches this limit, a recession will provoke, triggered by a large number of sales.

Price charts also have different timeframes — from 1 minute to 1 week, which allows you to conduct a more in-depth analysis of the movement of quotes of the selected asset.

Also in this version of Bithumb Global, various Indicators are available to traders. In total, the cryptocurrency exchange provides about 80 different indicators that will help in the technical analysis of the movement of crypto asset quotes.
Let’s analyze the main indicators available on Bithumb Global:
Volume — allows you to track the number of transactions completed by traders over a specific time interval. Green and red bars are indicators of the volume of transactions: red signals a decrease in volume, green — its growth. By analyzing the volume of transactions against the background of the price movement chart, you can confirm the strength of the trend or reveal its weakness and predict a price reversal. If prices rise and trading volume rises, we observe a bullish trend. An increase in trading volume in the event of a decline in prices indicates a bearish trend.
Moving Average (MA) is just as popular a tool as volume is. The indicator function analyzes the average prices for the selected time interval, which gives a relative idea of the general price trends. If the actual price of cryptocurrency for a long time keeps above the moving average, we can assume that it will continue to grow. Accordingly, a fall below MA is a signal to lower the price of an asset. For more accurate forecasts, it is advisable to use several moving averages based on different time intervals. Moreover, in case of disagreement, it is customary to consider the value of the average based on a longer period of time. If the signals from several moving averages coincide, we can talk about a fairly accurate forecast.
MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence) — having trained on one moving average, we will move on to a comprehensive analysis of this indicator. The MACD tool analyzes the convergence and divergence of three moving averages and can signal the beginning of a new trend. MACD also works well on different timeframes and is a fairly simple and popular indicator of technical analysis.
Zig Zag is an auxiliary indicator that analyzes the highest and lowest points of the cryptocurrency exchange rate and allows you to determine the correct entry points into the market. The plus of the indicator is that it eliminates the noise that can distort the forecast of the trend behavior. Minor fluctuations are simply not taken into account: lines connect the highest and lowest points of the price chart directly. The zigzag shows global market movements, but at the same time it only captures these changes in the past, without giving forecasts on the price behavior in the future.
Relative Strength Index (RSI) — shows the greatest efficiency in a sideways trend. With active course dynamics, RSI may produce incorrect data. Such indicators of technical analysis are called oscillators, and they must be used with caution. The indicator’s algorithms analyze price changes and allow you to evaluate the oversold or overbought status of an asset and, therefore, predict the occurrence of a bull or bear trend.
CCI (Commodity Channel Index) — The CCI or Commodity Channel Index, as well as the Relative Strength Index (RSI), helps evaluate overbought or oversold assets. This chart with values from minus 100 to plus 100 is displayed under the current price chart and can be applied on any timeframes. A CCI of more than a hundred means that the asset is overbought, and the price is about to fall, and on the contrary, a CCI below minus one hundred indicates the oversoldness of the asset and the likely increase in its price. This tool also refers to oscillators and is used during a lateral trend when there is no clear idea of how the price will behave in the near future.
ADC and DI — the index of the average direction and direction of movement, signals a change in trend. It looks like three lines on the chart: red — bears, green — bulls, blue (there may be other colors on different platforms) — the strength of the trend. This indicator is fairly reliable on four-hour and day frames. If the trend strength line is within 10−20 points, this indicates that the trend is gaining strength, but if the indicators reach 60−80 points, you should wait for the trend correction. The green and red lines will show who sets the market mood — bulls or bears. If the green line crosses the red line, the trend becomes bullish, and vice versa.

Indicators at Bithumb Global. Source.
Another useful tool available on the Professional Version of Bithumb Global is Trend Lines. It allows you to demonstrate in which direction the price of an asset is moving. The Dow theory, which is the basis of all technical analysis, suggests that no matter how the price behaves, it will always be in a particular trend. If the price behaves relatively evenly and stays in the same range without showing either growth or decline, such a trend is called a side or flat trend.
A growing (“bullish”) trend is characterized by the appearance of a series of ascending highs, with each new peak must be higher than the previous one. Accordingly, the “bearish” downtrend shows points of failure (price low), each subsequent of which will be lower than the previous one.
A trend line can be built on two points of a minimum or maximum, and a third confirming one is mandatory. The more points form a trend line, the more confident and stable the trend itself. The construction points should not be too close to each other in the time frame, otherwise the direction of the trend will not be completely correct. Please note that the uptrend line is plotted below the chart, and the downtrend is above it. The slope on the trend line should also be taken into account — its constancy indicates the stability of the trend. The change in the angle of the trend line is called the acceleration or deceleration of the price movement. The larger the angle, the faster the trend.
A line through price lows is called a support line. As soon as the price reaches it, it finds market support there and, pushing off, again strives upward. The line connecting price highs is called the resistance line. This is the level above which the value of the asset has not yet risen. If the price breaks the support or resistance line, this is a clear signal for a trend violation and a change in trading tactics.

Finally

The above are the basic trading tools available to traders of the Professional Version of the Bithumb Global crypto-exchange. They will help you figure out how to properly analyze the key metrics of cryptocurrency assets so that you can build the most advanced trading strategy. However, this is not the whole range of tools available to Bithumb Global traders. I'm and pro Bitcoin in the long term, but how much it follows the stock market is upsetting

I'l start buy saying I am pro Bitcoin over the long term so that I don't get roasted, but isn't it supposed to be its own asset class? Right now it feels like it is simply just another investment for somebody invested in stocks, gold, real estate, etc...it's just another thing to have in the portfolio. Makes me think most people are just in it to diversify rather than for it's potential. It is crazy to me how much it has been following the markets the past few weeks. If the dow goes up 50 points in a few minutes, I'll look at Bitcoin and it's up $20, if the Dow goes down 20 points then boom Bitcoin immediately goes down $10. Oh the Dows up 500? Turn and Bitcoin is up $120. Dows down 800? Bitcoin's down 160. Even little moves throughout the day Bitcoin is CONSTANTLY following the moves of the market, I can literally check a Bitcoin ticker all day and know the exact flow of the stock market during the same time frame

What I plan to do with the sub and approximately how long it will take to fully make.

Edit: Rather than annoy everyone with another post, I figured I'd just do a quick edit as of 7:55 3/10/2020. There have been multiple complaints as to people's posts getting removed mysteriously. I am definitely looking into it and apologize for the inconvenience. I will be doing major editing next week of 3/14/2020-3/21/2020 (As my real life is pretty slammed this week) so hopefully during then we can get the minor kinks out and make this sub amazing!
Edit 2: As of 3/11/10:24pm, we have identified the problem that Reddit's spam bot is going nuts removal multiple posts. I will hire/make a professional spam bot that doesn't filter every post. I apologize again for this issue. For now, we will have to manually approve the posts.
Edit 3: 3/18/2020 12:54pm It's almost beautiful, still a couple things, a few issues with automoderator and other things. Also I will make a post on posting. We don't want people to be afraid to post here and we aren't nazis who ban everyone, we just want to have folks post some reasoning behind their posts. Rather than "This good?" Maybe try writing "Based on ***** I am wondering if this will be a good investment." Basically, what we are looking for is having some knowledge on what you are investing on and asking/giving advice on why you believe something. What makes us different is the high standards based on research and educated folks on their investments. And if you do break this rule, we will probably not remove your post (unless you are trying to cause trouble and doing this all the time), we will probably just comment how you can make your post more relevent for our sub. We give lots of chances because we want you to succeed and rather than lower our standards, we push you to become the best most educated version of yourself on your stock market goals. I will make a post relatively soon on all this to clear up confusions.
And please remember pennystocks are $5 and below
I plan to make this sub for strictly for DD, discussion, and overall filtering the spam from other more popular subs.
I will definitely make a more in depth post on the rules, what is expected, what is not allowed, etc. And will create chatrooms etc for user discussion.
While it's in its beta stage (probably for a whole week 14th - 21st (when I plan to do most of the perfecting)) I will do many updates, dd of my own, and editing. It would be done sooner, but my real life can be busy sometimes causing a slower pace at which things are done.
While it's still in beta mode, please feel free to upload your DD, discussions, and articles of evidence etc. Things that aren't lowgrade posts like "what should I throw $50 on?" or "Thoughts?" If you're going to make a post similar to "thoughts" atleast have done some resemblence of research and add more than just one word and a ticker. It's a discussion, we don't spoon feed you on how to spend your money. We present the options, our ideas, and you make your choice on if you think what we are saying has any legitimacy.
I would also like to mention we aren't a meme sub, that is robinhoodpennystocks and wallstreetbets. We are strictly information so our users can make an informed decision rather than herd mentality. You will have the evidence to make your choice(s).
While I'm working, any ideas, constructive criticisms, all welcome. This will be a great sub someday and we will be educated enough to make informed decisions rather than going for stock pumping. And who knows, maybe our sub will discover the next bitcoin or another diamond in the rough.
And since we are new and as a personal incentive to contribute, if your DD is correct and reasoning behind it is correct, I will personally give you an award on your post. This incentivizes contributions and is an extra plus for researching and doing well!
An idea I've also had is requiring brackets, but I'm not sure if the community would like that and will not add until we all make a choice on if we think that would help.
For example: [Research] [DD] [Question] [Discussion] in your title.
Or maybe requiring a post flair so computer users can filter Questions from Research etc.

Bitcoin Roars Back After Sell-Off. It May Have More Room to Run, Analyst Says.

Bitcoin in recent weeks has roared back from its sell-off . The cryptocurrency could be set to break out further, according to researchers at Fundstrat Global Advisors.
It was recently trading at $8,851.40, up 1.27% in the past 24 hours, according to CoinBase. Bitcoin had flown as high as $9,411.56 Thursday afternoon, before paring back gains.
“Bitcoin has certainly sprung back to life,” writes Craig Erlam, senior market analyst at OANDA. “It took some patience with the break of $7,500 not giving it the boost it could have but once $8,000 fell, it really took off.”
A number of Bitcoin analysts pointed to the upcoming halving , an event every four years when rewards for those mining new coins using their computer power are halved. The halving, also referred to as a “halvening” is expected on May 12.
“Historically, reward halvings have resulted in significant price appreciation since they reduce Bitcoin’s supply, which pushes the price higher,” noted Joe DiPasquale, CEO of BitBull Capital. “The market sentiment is also positive leading up to the event. That, combined with expected inflation in the long-term for the U.S. dollar due to recent quantitative easing, is being credited with today’s surge.”
Fundstrat researchers wrote in a note to clients on Thursday that Bitcoin had crossed its $8,897 200-day moving average. Over a 10-year sample size, Bitcoin’s typical six-month forward returns are 193% after such an event, according to the note.
Bitcoin did cross this mark last year. But the team at Fundstrat argued the potential rally was hampered by negative chatter regarding Facebook’s (ticker: FB) Libra project. Lawmakers had been critical of Facebook’s plans for its own cryptocurrency project .
“If crypto doesn’t face regulatory/Congressional backlash, there are better odds for a positive outcome,” according to the researchers at Fundstrat.

Short 10Y JGBs and German Bunds

automod won't let me share for some reason, but would like to start discussing the end of the biggest bubble in the history of the world still not popped. Yep, sovereign bonds. Specifically, Japanese and German bonds that's still considered a safe haven in this world full of crashing markets and full on pandemic induced liquidity crunch. People sell anything they can get cash to meet margin calls with and yet these sovereigns have held up remarkably well because people think this only goes up in bear markets. What were the other "safe" havens people are now liquidating? One starts with a G and ends with OLD and the other is something something bitcoin.
The financial crisis and great recession in 08 had arguably been averted by ultra low interest rates where banks borrowed money from the central bank's only to buy long dated government issuances for lit free tendies like the autists that all professionals like to pretend they are not. Nowhere had this retarded behavior been as apparent as in the German and Japanese bond market (at least the most liquid ones)
I won't pretend I'm some expert on repos and leverage on eurodollars like that noob that got all that attention week or two ago but I am retarded enough to make a bet that this trade is in the starting stages of unwinding. At the very least, people will prefer US treasuries with a Fed going zero rates rather than retarded ECB that has set their facility rates at neg 0.4% and Japan with no choice but to keep monetizing to the point they are literally holding 30% of stock ETFs (Google it) to the point these two more retarded central banks are so much more retarded than even our own retarded Fed.
Best part of this trade is the IV on sovereign bonds is retardedly low for these sovereigns (no one expects them to blow out) Bunds is around 10% and JGBs are a measely 6%. In a world where all our retarded SPY puts are around 80% that is a steal.
So since you've read this far, here's the trades (and my positions linked)
Puts on 10Y German Bunds (ticker GBL in interactive brokers) any strike below 173 with Jun Expiry (next futures roll)
Puts on 10Y JGBs (ticker JGB in interactive brokers) any strike below 162 with Apr or May expiry (more liquid)
I put my money where these thoughts are but that doesn't mean you should. Please don't blame me if central banks somehow keep this bubble going for another 6 months and the most you'll lose is a few thousand dollars in premium per contract.

Edit: My previous DD on this blocked by automod https://www.reddit.com/wallstreetbets/comments/fau18i/puts_on_german_10y_bund_futures/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

Bitcoin Dash, or How (not) to Merge Blockchains?

Since there was a recent Tao & Amanda video about merging DASH and Bitcoin Cash (BCH), and many still seem to be into it, I would like to clarify why I don't think it's a good idea. It has nothing to do with looking weak, being fearful, or selling out, but technical problems with the way blockchains work (it's really hard to kill a chain). This is all IMO, and I'd be happy for anyone to disagree/agree.
It was a nice marketing idea to attract attention to DASH's superior technology, and got a lot of people talking, but in reality, merging blockchains can't work. It won't result in more unity, but more divisions instead.
I believe that the only way a chain merge could happen is if a newly forked project is created that "respects" all UTXOs from both DASH and BCH (at some "arbitrary" fixed exchange rate). Then, just as Ethereum forked to create both ETH and ETC, and Bitcoin forked to create both BTC and BCH... then both DASH and BCH "merging" (forking) would result in THREE (3) existing chains: BCH, DASH, and BC-ASH (or whatever ticker is chosen). Many believed ETC and BCH would just die off, but they have not. It's unlikely that a merge-fork could kill off the old DASH/BCH chains, either.
It is not similar to a stock merger, because the stock certificates you own are all transferred to the merged company's stock. In contrast, a blockchain project can continue to exist and trade on exchanges after a fork/merge, as long as anyone in the world continues to run the original software. Two blockchains merging is not really a merge - it's more like a fork to a third chain (which "respects" the UTXOs of both merging blockchains, by allowing anyone that has a UTXO on either chain to spend to a transaction on the "newly merged" chain).
But suppose somehow all of DASH agrees to merge, creating just two chains: original BCH and the newly "merged" DASH (aka BC-ASH). This would still be pretty bad. Even in the unlikely case that all DASH users agreed (by vote of MNOs and software update/enforcement) - i.e. allowing BCH's UTXOs to be spent on DASH's new "merged chain" - it's quite likely that many BCH holders would not want it, and would just sell the newly merged coins on the open market, depressing the price of the new chain. Just as BTC hodlers sold their BCH post-fork to get more BTC, the BCH holders would probably sell their "free DASH" to get more BCH. Furthermore, it's not necessary for DASH to fork to "allow BCH spends" (aka "merge") - anyone with BCH that wants DASH can already buy, mine, or earn it, today!
(It's not really possible for the "merge" to create just one chain, because BCH cannot all "agree" to merge - lack of governance that resulted in BTC-BCH-BSV-etc ensures that)
TLDR;
(1) A "merge" would most likely create 3 communities, and each of the resultant three communities would probably be smaller than each of the two previous communities, resulting in more divisions rather than unity.
(2) A "merge" could less likely create only 2 communities, but BCH-ers would just sell their "newly acquired" merged coin, depressing the price instead of growing the community.
(3) A "merge" cannot create one community, because BCH lacks the governance.

Is it the right time to buy the dip?

Is it the right time to buy the dip?
https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2019-01-09/gundlach-compares-recent-buy-the-dip-mentality-to-subprime-crisis

Gundlach Compares Recent Buy-the-Dip Mentality to Subprime Crisis

Jeffrey Gundlach is worried that investors are getting suckered into buying the dip in stocks, high-yield bonds and leveraged loans.
In his annual “Just Markets” webcast on Tuesday, DoubleLine Capital’s chief investment officer sounded off on a range of topics, including Bitcoin, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell’s “pivot,” the growth of the U.S. national debt, and the problem of underfunded state and local government pension plans. But it was the “BTFD” 1mentality that’s lasted for so long in risky corners of the financial market that had him drawing comparisons to the subprime mortgage crisis. He explained his chief cause for concern:
“People were panicking in the later part of December. They were panicking, actually, but the flow data shows they were panicking into stocks, not out of stocks. People have been so programmed, and feel so frustrated by selling when we get dips, that this time they weren’t going to be fooled. This time, they were going to buy the dip. I worry about that, though, because it reminds me a little bit about how the credit crisis developed in 2007 and 2008.”
He’s right. A quick look at fund flow data for the iShares Core S&P 500 exchange-traded fund (ticker IVV) and the SPDR S&P 500 ETF (ticker SPY) tells the story. The iShares fund avoided outflows from Dec. 11 through the end of last week, even as stocks fluctuated wildly, data compiled by Bloomberg show. The SPDR fund drew the most money since February on Dec. 21, the day it tumbled 2.62 percent, part of the fund’s longest losing streak since January 2008.

https://preview.redd.it/a4z0rqb9gm921.png?width=754&format=png&auto=webp&s=2c6acad308881b15b4d8f3c96966b43a337eca35

Whoever did that is “feeling good today,” Gundlach said. But he offered a reminder of what happened to investors more than a decade ago who snapped up subprime mortgages at what they thought were low prices.
“The people who bought the dip, they didn’t sell, they hung on, and the market started to crack again. And we have that waterfall that ended up happening. The people who bought the dip ended up getting scared and turned from buyers into sellers. There’s potential for that here.”
It’s not just the U.S. stock market that’s witnessing this, either. Junk bonds have come roaring back, with the Bloomberg Barclays U.S. Corporate High Yield Bond Index already returning 2.5 percent so far in 2019. The average price of leveraged loans, as measured by the S&P/LSTA Leveraged Loan Index, is up to 96 cents, compared with 93.8 cents at the end of 2018. Investors should use this recent strength in junk bonds “as a gift, and get out of them,” Gundlach said.
“Investors bought bank loans and high yield, I can understand why you buy the dip, I get it, buying the dip certainly worked back in 2016 and if you missed that, you feel bad about it. But like I said about subprime back in 2007, the first people, they buy the dip, they’ve never done that before, but they’ve been trained now to do it after continued frustration for not doing so, and then when prices head lower, suddenly those buyers turn into sellers, and with all the supply that’s coming, it’s a really interesting issue who’s going to buy it.”
All of this is to say Gundlach doesn’t seem to be a fan of risky investments at these prices. By his thinking, capital preservation is key because markets may be approaching the point at which some of these dips are going to end up being much more than just that. Though he wouldn’t necessarily load up on long-term U.S. Treasuries, either — that rally might be over, after a nice rebound to end 2018, he said.

https://preview.redd.it/71bstrtigm921.png?width=780&format=png&auto=webp&s=a3750e6fba846d2f0c945755ba7fcc975dae673d

Dismiss his gloomy outlook if you wish, but, as Bloomberg News’s John Gittelsohn noted ahead of the webcast, a lot of what Gundlach predicted in 2018 came true. He called for U.S. equities to rise early in 2018 but then eventually reverse and leave the market down for the year. He nailed the direction of stocks better than some of his equity counterparts.

If you’re an active fund manager, it’s hard not to sympathize with his view on buying the dip. It has been so prevalent, for so long, that it seemed almost inevitable that the late 2018 drop wouldn’t last. The wave of cash coming into passive ETFs tracking the S&P 500, even as the market tumbled, says it all.

No one is perfect when it comes to predictions, but Gundlach’s 2018 calls were largely spot on. If that happens again in 2019, investors had better buckle up for some turbulent times.

Financial Modeling for Cryptocurrencies: The spreadsheet that got me my first 1,000% gain

TL;DR: I created a spreadsheet that automates pulling trending cryptocurrencies, recent tweets, and bullish/bearish sentiment into Google Sheets. You can find it here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1QtxaDWCoXkIqjPVVkU8DNsx8GBaBd180COwn1CIasa8/copy
I know some crypto users prefer to work in spreadsheets (including myself) so I created a spreadsheet that looks at trending symbols and estimates bullish/bearish sentiment. I never had the time to develop software engineering skills, but the recent launch of a few add-ins has allowed regular joes like myself to harness the power of APIs.

The Beauty of Sentiment Trading

According to Google Trends, the word “sentiment analysis” has been gaining steady traction over the past 5 years.
Sentiment refers to the attitude expressed by an individual regarding a certain topic. This is especially relevant in trading, where so much of the change in price is dictated by emotions:
When it is applied to trading, sentiment can be used (with great potential windfall) as a directional signal to figure out whether you should enter a crypto position within your portfolio.
A way you can utilize sentiment when trading crypto, is to measure the positivity or negativity of a tweet. If recent tweets have been overwhelmingly bullish (aka, the person expects the crypto rise) and movement is beginning to happen in the currency, chances are good that the trend will continue.
Luckily for you, StockTwits already does this with around 225 different cryptocurrencies. And if you can combine the sentiment with trending cryptocurrencies, you can catch the wave right as it forms.

Services Used:

  1. Google Sheets
  2. Spreadstreet Google Sheets Add-in
  3. StockTwits
  4. CoinMarketCap API
Full disclosure: The google sheets add-in is a 14-day free trial, and $15 per month after. However, no one should be refused access on the basis of money (especially true for students and less fortunate). Send me a message, and I will make sure you are not left in the dark.

A note on security

Users have expressed hesitation about running a google sheets add-in on their main computer, so I will attempt to ease those concerns:

What it pulls:

AN OVERVIEW OF THE SECTIONS

The Dashboard
Changing the timeframe
Changing the cryptocurrency
Instructions Tab
Summary Tab

How to use the spreadsheet to spot trending cryptocurrencies

You will spend most of your time in the “Analysis” tab, where the trending cryptocurrencies reside.
I am almost always looking at the “By Hour” timeframe, as the “By Day” and “By Week” is usually a missed opportunity…however, those time frames can still be very useful (albeit, for different reasons).
You want to ride the wave on a cryptocurrency under one or both of the following conditions:
  1. The tweets are very recent, preferably within the last hour
  2. Overwhelmingly Bullish sentiment
A Great Example
A Bad Example

Getting the spreadsheet to work for you

1. Install the Spreadstreet add-in for Google Sheets
2. Get sheet ready for use with the add-in
3. After logging into the add-in, refresh the sheet

Troubleshooting

  1. Important Open the template, click the menu Add-ons / Spreadstreet / Help / View in store, and then click Manage and in the dropdown menu click “Use in this document.”
  2. A reload of the entire worksheet fixes quite a few problems.
  3. Deleting and re-pasting the formula in A1 of the “Data” tab fixes things as well.
  4. If all else fails, drop me a message
  5. The “TIMEFRAME” cell in the Analysis tab (B3) refreshes the pull. Change the results for new data.
Some trending coins are not pulling correctly…what’s going on?
StockTwits has a list of ~225 coins it currently supports. See the “TweetInfo” tab for the full list.
I have tried logging in, activating the template with “Use in this document” and refreshed the sheet…still nothing.
Head to the “Data” tab. Delete the formula in cell A1, and repaste the following: =SS(“tickers-coinmarketcap”, headers, “0”, Currency)
Hoping this is something that is useful to everyone, and I am more than happy to help peeps setup the sheet so they can use it. Just send me a message on here.

Weekly Wrap 27/09

Market News
This week's market action saw bitcoin take a hammering as the price dropped over 20% and broke the key $8000 USD support area. The price is currently trading near the $8000 USD level and we are keeping a close eye on the $7500 USD support level.
It is interesting to see that tether surpassed bitcoin cash in terms of market capitalization, reaching over $4.1 billion USD. Though this move isn't very surprising as many traders choose to switch to tether in times of extreme volatility, it shows that tether continues to remain a top hedging token for traders.
